Welcome to Day Star School

Day Star Logo

Day Star School is located in the center of the tourist resort town of Manali, in Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh, India. It all began in June 1985, with nine students, one teacher and no infrastructure in response to the educational needs of the children in and around Lady Willingdon Hospital. Every year more children from the neighboring villages got enrolled in the school. Many well wishers contributed towards the capital cost of the building. Now there are 500 students, both boys and girls, 20 teaching staff and 9 non-teaching staff. The school is affiliated to I.C.S.E, New Delhi. So far, 300 children have passed out from the school.

Day Star Philosophy:

Day Star School seeks to build a close relationship with the home of the child so as to influence her/his overall growth. The School strives to enable children gain skills, knowledge and attitudes that are essential for living full and fruitful lives. The School upholds the dignity of every individual and seeks to help children discover their self-worth and uniqueness. Children are encouraged to become responsible to society, to oneself and to God.
Besides academic ability, children are encouraged to pursue excellence in all they do; to delay instant gratification for long term benefits to self and society; and to discover that satisfaction and happiness are by-products of service and selfless giving.
Parents are the first teachers, and need to rise up to fulfill this primary responsibility sensibly and fully. Teachers play an equally critical role. Both, parents and teachers are role models from whom children learn common courtesy and decency, relationship skills, communication styles and values for living.

Our view of education:

We all have different ideas about education and its goal. We can talk about literacy as the goal. We can talk about gathering information/knowledge that will help us secure a job, livelihood as the goal. I think education has a higher goal- to become wise. Scripture talks about two kinds of people, the wise and the foolish. The wise take God into account and receive wisdom. It is the ability to apply learnt truth and facts to life’s day-to-day affairs thus finding meaning and purpose. It is knowing what is worth pursuing, how to talk and how to relate to people around. It is about finding the proper and right foundation to build one’s house, one’s life.

So the goal of education is to help individual’s to become wise, to be connected to the source of life and find life in it’s fullness. It is to enter the unknown through what is known. It is to live in wonder and awe at the created world and to seek the Creator. It is to accept the revelation and mysteries and become part of the solution to problems around. It is to look at life’s realities both good and bad and go beyond the normal human reactions to reflect the Creator’s heart and mind. So education has a spiritual dimension to it.

Education can change us in more than one way. Day Star School believes that through education we can learn to give dignity to individuals and transform traditional mindset that devalues people. We can learn to respect people from all sorts of backgrounds and celebrate differences and uniqueness of each one.

It can generate a sense of equality between fellow beings, to rise above the various restrictions created by society like colour, caste, creed, sex, wealth and nationality. Education can help people to become responsible and care for the world around and value what is given to us by the creator and make it a better place for all.

School can imprint this responsibility in children, to be agents of redemption, to bring about social justice by reclaiming humanity from the clutches of corporate and organized evil all around.Education can bring about some dignity of civility but it is not a solution to all human problems. Here wisdom is needed and God is the source of all wisdom and He has said, "If anyone lacks wisdom, let him ask." Education is about teaching children to ask, knock and seek for this wisdom.
